Reading Education

Reading is essential to success in our society. (Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998)

Reading is the number one priority, and reading has been declared a critical teacher shortage area. (Florida Department of Education)

The graduate program in Reading Education is housed in the School of Teaching & Learning within the College of Education. Its main emphasis is to prepare exemplary researchers, teachers, and teacher educators who are committed to improving literacy education for PreK-16 students.

The program offers diverse, rigorous, and coherent sequences of coursework, as well as related experiences, that lead to reading endorsement, reading certification, Master's of Education (M.Ed.) in reading, and advanced degrees (Ed.S., Ed.D., Ph.D.) in Curriculum & Instruction with an emphasis on reading.

The program faculty include nationally recognized experts in the field. They have published books and journal articles, and presented at international, national, and state conferences. The program also boasts a diverse, dynamic body of promising graduate students who often collaborate with faculty in a variety of teaching, research, and service activities. Past graduates of the program have found jobs in colleges and universities, PreK-12 schools, state departments of education, and other education-related agencies.
