The faculty of the School of Teaching and Learning offer a broad range of teacher-education programs. The department offers three nationally recognized teacher preparation programs. The secondary PROTEACH program is housed within the School of Teaching and Learning (STL). Faculty in STL collaborate with faculty from the Department of Special Education to offer the Unified Elementary and Unified Early Childhood PROTEACH programs. These rigorous programs consist of five years of intensive work in the arts and sciences, and professional education culminating in the Master of Education degree and state certification as a classroom teacher. The programs are based upon broad theoretical and research foundations. The PROTEACH faculty integrate their programs with knowledge drawn from research on effective teaching, teacher reflection, subject area learning, and teacher socialization.

Within the secondary program faculty emphasize the central role of rigorous academic knowledge in the arts and sciences plus sound professional knowledge in education for effective teaching at the secondary school level. The five specialization areas in secondary PROTEACH are mathematics, English, science, social studies, and foreign language education. Illustrative of the defining features of these programs are the three realms of teacher knowledge, action, and reflection that define the central concepts in the social studies education program namely teacher preparation, presentation and prescription.

In the Unified Elementary and Early Childhood programs the emphasis is on preparing all teachers to teach all children, including those with special needs and those from diverse backgrounds. Both programs are built on the understanding that effective teachers are reflective, and committed to educational equity and student empowerment, that knowledge is constructed by learners, and that effective teaching and learning are grounded in student-teacher collaboration. The faculty also emphasize the use of student perspectives and values in designing curriculum and teaching, and the use of evidence of student learning as a basis for instruction. Because the faculty believe that a teacher's classroom practices are developed through the interaction of the teacher's perspectives and teaching context, the faculty also focus on analysis of teaching perspectives and contexts.

At the master's level, Unified Elementary PROTEACH students may elect to specialize in Special Education and thus receive dual certification in elementary and special education or they may elect single certification in elementary education with a specialization in areas such as: Literacy Education, which combines reading, writing, children's literature, and the language arts; English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL); Math/Science Education: Educational Technology, which emphasizes instructional uses of computers and the creation of technologically rich environments; and an interdisciplinary specialization, designed to include reading across the curriculum, science, math, and social studies.

In addition to the initial teacher preparation programs, the department offers traditional masters programs (open to candidates who already have a professional certificate) in areas such as reading, elementary education, and technology. The department also offers three advanced degree programs (Education Specialist, Doctor of Education and Doctor of Philosophy) in the following areas of concentration: Bilingual/Multicultural Education, Business Education, Early Childhood Education, Educational Media & Instructional Design, Elementary Education, English Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages, Foreign Language Education, Educational Technology, Mathematics Education, Middle School Education, Reading Education, Science Education, and Social Studies Education.
