Overview

The Educational Technology program in the College of Education at the University of Florida will provide students with a thorough understanding of the ways that education is evolving to embrace electronic media. Students in the Educational Technology program will be exposed to a variety relevant topics and topics including (but not limited to) instructional design & development, cognition and human performance, human-technology-human dialog, educational gaming and its impact on cognitive processing, diffusion of innovations, adult learning theory, designing multimedia environments, culturally responsive uses of technology, innovative applications of web-based technologies and design, implementation and evaluation of online courses and programs.

Program graduates earn a variety of positions in higher education, K-12 education, government, business and industry. In order to meet the diverse needs of our population, program plans are devised in collaboration with a faculty advisor and frequently include courses from other Colleges including Journalism, Computer Science, Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology and the Digital Worlds Institute. Students should strive to have an official program of study completed by the end of your first semester for Masters students and by the end of your first twelve hours for Ed.S., Ed.D., and Ph.D. students.

Minimum Requirements

M.Ed. | MAE | Ed.S. | Ed.D. | Ph.D.

Masters of Education (M.Ed.): Advisors will work with each student to establish a planned program of study. Programs must contain the following minimal requirements. NOTE: Completely online students should follow guidelines on our online program page.

  1. EME 5054: Foundations of Educational Technology (3 hours) Offered in Fall
  2. Minimum of 8 relevant courses selected and approved by your advisor before registering for the courses (24 hours)
  3. 1 graduate curriculum course (3 hours)
  4. 1 graduate foundations course (3 hours)
  5. EME 6945: Practicum in Eduational Media (3 hour culminating experience)

Masters of Arts in Education (MAE) : Advisors will work with each student to establish a planned program of study. Programs must contain the following minimal requirements.

  1. EME 5054: Foundations of Educational Technology (3 hours) Offered in Fall
  2. Minimum of 7 relevant courses selected and approved by your advisor before registering for the courses (21 hours)
  3. 1 graduate curriculum course (3 hours)
  4. 1 graduate foundations course (3 hours)
  5. EDG 6971: Research for Master's Thesis OR EDG 6973 Project in Lieu of Thesis (6 hour culminating experience)

Specialists: Advisors will work with each specialist's student to established a planned program of study. Programs must contain the following minimal requirements & include at least 72 hours beyond the Bachelor's degree. NOTE: Completely online students should follow guidelines on our online program page.

  1. EME 5054: Foundations of Educational Technology (3 hours) Offered in Fall
  2. Minimum of 14 relevant courses selected and approved by your advisor before registering for the courses NOTE: some of these may transfer from M.Ed. or MAE degrees (42 hours)
  3. Minimum of 3 relevant courses in curriculum and foundations of education (9 hours)
  4. Minimum of 1 graduate research cours (3 hours)
  5. EME 7938: Seminar in Educational Technology to be taken shortly before Specialist Exams (3 hours)
  6. EDG 6910: Supervised Research (minimum of 5 hours)

 

Doctoral: After selecting an advisor or co-advisors, the student and advisor will with a Doctoral Committee (selected by student and advisor(s))to submit a planned program of study.

  1. EME 5054: Foundations of Educational Technology (3 hours) Offered in Fall
  2. Minimum of 14 relevant courses selected and approved by your advisor before registering for the courses NOTE: some of these may transfer from M.Ed., MAE or Ed.S. degrees (42 hours)
  3. Minimum of 4 courses beyond the bachelor degree at the 6000 or 7000 level in curriculum, foundations, and doctoral seminars in the School of Teaching and Learning. (12 hours)
  4. 2 Seminars in Educational Technology
    1. EME 7938: Trends and Issues (taken shortly before qualifying exams)
    2. EME 7938: Becoming a scholar in the field(taken after qualifying exams)
  5. Research/Methods Track required by College of Education for Ed.D. and Ph.D. students
  6. Doctoral Qualifying Exams
  7. Dissertation
