Doctoral Student Conference Travel Support Guidelines

Supporting doctoral students is an important component of the doctoral programs in the School of Teaching & Learning. Part of becoming active in the professional community is to attend and actively participate in professional conferences and organizations. The School of Teaching & Learning has a commitment to assisting doctoral students as they develop into scholars. One method of this support is the School of Teaching & Learning Doctoral Student Conference Travel Support. For the 2009-2010 academic year, the School of Teaching & Learning is pleased that we have been given $5,000 to support doctoral students in this manner.

Who is eligible? Any STL doctoral student who is attending or presenting at a conference will be considered for STL funding. Priority will be given to students who have reached candidacy, students who are presenting, and students particapating in national or international conferences.

What is the amount of the travel support? The maximum award will be $250 per travel request.

How often can a doctoral student receive support? STL Doctoral Student Travel Support is limited to one time per academic year.

When are applications due?

2009-2010 Academic Year:
Fall Conferences: All applications are due to Ms. Chris Barnes in 2403 Norman Hall by October 2, 2009 before 5:00 p.m.
Spring and Summer Conferences: All applications are due to the STL Graduate Coordinator by February 6, 2010, before 5:00 p.m.

What is the application process?

Step 1: Obtain and complete the application for the University of Florida Graduate Student Council's grant application. You do NOT have to be a doctoral candidate* to apply for this funding source. This application requires the signature of your major advisor. This must be submitted to the Graduate Student Council at least 6 weeks prior to your travel.

Step 2: If you are a doctoral candidate*, you also need to obtain and complete the application for the Office of Research and Graduate Program's Graduate Student Travel Funds application. (Scroll down to Graduate Student Travel Funds). This application requires signatures from your dissertation supervisor, the department chair (see the STL Graduate Coordinator for this signature), and a representative from the College of Education Dean's Office. Completing this application gives you access to an additional source of funding. This must be submitted to the UF Office of Research at least 1 month prior to your travel.

Step 3: Submit a copy of the completed application(s) and supporting materials from Steps 1 & 2 to Ms. Chris Barnes in 2403 Norman Hall. If you are presenting at the conference, be sure to include a copy of your conference presentation acceptance letter or email. The STL Graduate Coordinator will forward your materials to the STL Graduate Studies Committee who will award fudning.

Step 4: Submit the original completed application(s) from Steps 1 & 2 to the appropriate office(s) to apply for additional funding.

Step 5: Forward email notification of the award result from either the University of Florida Graduate Student Council or the UF Office of Research. This information will go in your file. (It is also important for us to know as we must match the offer for some awards.)
