Florida Reading Endorsement (Plan B)

This plan is for students who are enrolled in the Unified Elementary ProTeach Initial Teacher Education program at UF. Each candidate must submit his or her transcript for course count transcript analysis to the Florida Department of Education for Florida Reading Endorsement at the completion of their coursework.

State of Florida Requirements: A bachelor's degree or higher with certification in an academic, degreed vocation, administrative, or specialty class coverage and fifteen (15) semester hours of reading in the following areas:

Area 1: Basic Foundations (6 Hours)
Understanding reading as a process of student engagement in both fluent decoding of words and construction of meaning.

RED 3307: Teaching Reading in Primary Grades (3 hours)
(This course addresses Reading Competencies 1, 2, & 4.)

RED 4324: Reading in the Intermediate Grades (3 hours)
(This course addresses Reading Competencies 1, 2, & 4.)

Area 2: Reading Assessment/Diagnosis (3 Hours)
Administration and interpretation of instructional assessments to include screening, diagnosis, and progress monitoring with purposes of prevention, identification, and remediation of reading difficulties.

RED 6546: Diagnosis of Reading Difficulties (3 hours)
OR
RED 6520: Classroom Reading Assessment and Instruction (3 hours)
(Both of these two course address Reading Competency 3.)

Area 3: Reading Remediation/Differentiated Instruction (3 Hours)
Understanding how to prescribe, differentiate instruction, and utilize appropriate strategies and materials based upon scientifically based reading research in order to address the prevention, identification, and remediation of reading difficulties in order to increase reading performance.

RED 6548: Remediation of Reading Difficulties (3 hours)
(This course addresses Reading Competency 5.)

Area 4: Reading Practicum (3 Hours)
A supervised practicum to obtain practical experience in increasing the reading performance of a student(s) with the prescription and utilization of appropriate strategies and materials based upon scientifically based reading research to address the prevention, identification, and remediation of reading difficulties.

RED 6941: Practicum in Diagnosis and Remediation of Reading Difficulties (3 hours)
(This course addresses Reading Competency 6.)
