Florida K-12 Reading Certification for Unified Elementary ProTeach Students at UF
The following plans provides guidance for students in the state and NCATE-approved program in Elementary Education K-6 (Unified Elementary ProTeach) at the University of Florida who wish to add K-12 reading certification. Students should plan for and complete the following coursework and Florida Teacher Certification Exam to add Reading K-12 certification from Florida.
Area One: Foundations of Reading (6 Hours)
RED 3307: Teaching Reading in Primary Grades (3 hours)
RED 4324: Reading in the Intermediate Grades (3 hours)
Area Two: Corrective Reading and Measurement (12 Hours)
RED 6520: Classroom Reading Assessment and Instruction (3 hours)
RED 6546: Diagnosis of Reading Difficulties (3 hours)
RED 6548: Remediation of Reading Difficulties (3 hours)
RED 6941: Practicum in Diagnosis and Remediation of Reading Difficulties (3 hours)
Area Three: Language Arts and Literature (9 Hours)
LAE 3005: Children's Literature in Childhood Education (3 hours)
LAE 4314: Language Arts for Diverse Learners (3 hours)
LAE 6939: Literacy, Family, and Culture (3 hours)
Area Four: ESOL (3 Hours)
TSL 5143: ESOL Strategies (3 hours)
Area V: Florida Certification Examination
Prior to graduation, you must submit passing scores on the Florida Certification Exam for Reading K-12. If you complete all the requirements above and you want to add certification in Reading K-12 when you apply for Elementary K-6 Certification, you must indicate that on your application and you must pay an additional fee of $56.00 for adding the area of Reading. The Reading Certification portion of your application will be determined through "course count transcript analysis" and is not part of the state-and NCATE-approved program in Elementary Education K-6 (Unified Elementary ProTeach).
