Frequently Asked Questions about English Proteach
What prerequisites do I need to take? EDF 3135—The Adolescent
What English courses will help me develop appropriate background knowledge for teaching in a middle school or high school?
The English language arts curriculum in public schools remains focused on canonical works and students are advised to develop an understanding of traditional texts and of the forms and genres that make up literature study. At the same time, student populations are becoming more diverse and the stories of our time are increasing multimodal. For these reasons, the English Education faculty suggests that students take a variety of courses that mix the old and the new, such as Shakespeare, Survey of American Literature, Survey of English Literature, Adolescent Literature, Multicultural or Minority Literature, Advanced Composition, Contemporary Literature, Introduction to Film, and Narrative Theory. The background knowledge that you develop in the field of English and in the processes of how to study texts will be invaluable to you as you reflect on how to support youth in developing as competent consumers and creators of all types of texts.
What is my Program of Study?
A Program of Study is a form that you will complete during the first few weeks of the fall term. The Program of Study is a legal document that describes the courses you must complete and the tests you must pass to graduate from English Proteach. Download a copy of the Program of Study Form for English Proteach.
What grades will I be certified to teach? Grades 6-12
How do I acquire my Florida certificate?
English Proteach is state-approved and NCATE certified. Completion of the program is also completion of state certification requirements. However, an application for a certificate and for ESOL endorsement must be submitted to the Florida Department of Certification.
Can I teach in other states?
Because English Proteach also has NCATE approval, usually students can become certified in other states without completing additional coursework. There are many English Proteach graduates who have gotten certification in states, such as California, Colorado, Virginia, Georgia, and Illinois without meeting additional requirements. However, each state has different standards and requirements change. Therefore, students are advised to make appropriate inquiries to determine whether or not they have to meet additional requirements to become certified in a state other than Florida.
