ESOL Specialization: Unified Elementary ProTeach
The ESOL specialization develops in-depth understanding of issues of language, culture and effective practices for bilingual students. Students who complete the specialization meet the accomplished practices for ESOL teachers as outlined by the Florida Department of Educadtion.
The ProTeach Unified Elementary program includes the possibilites for an ESOL specialization. The purpose of this specialization is to provide the student with the in-depth skills and knowledge necessary for an effective ESOL teacher. There are two routes to develop this level of expertise.
- Option 1: Early Decision: For this option, you must have completed the TSL 3526: ESOL Foundations: Language, and Culture course. If you declare your intention to become an ESOL specialization students before your fifth year, you do not have to take the first year graduate course TSL 5142: ESOL Curriculum, Methods & Assessment. Instead, you must take three required ESOL classes and two additional ESOL courses (a total of 15 credit hours after completion of TSL 3526).
- Option 2: Specialization in the Fifth Year: You may decide to specialize as an ESOL teacher after having completed TSL 3526: ESOL Foundations: Language and Culture and TSL 5142: ESOL Curriculum, Methods, and Assessment. To complete the specialization, you must select a total of 12 credits from an approved list of courses.
