ESOL Specialization: Unified Elementary ProTeach
The Unified Elementary ProTeach program includes the possibility of an ESOL specialization. The purpose of this specialization is to develop an in-depth understanding of issues of language, culture, and effective practices for bilingual students. If you are interested in working intensively with ESOL students or expect to teach in a school or district with large numbers of English language learners, the ESOL specialization will prepare you with more specialized knowledge and skills, additional classroom-based experiences, and an internship option with ESOL students. Students who complete the specialization meet the Accomplished Practices for ESOL teachers as outlined by the Florida Department of Education.
To complete the ESOL specialization, you must take a total of 12 credits in addition to TSL 3520 [formerly TSL 3526] and TSL 5142. Language Principles for ESOL Teachers (TSL 6245) is required for all students except those enrolled in a fall semester internship. Additional specialization courses should be selected from the approved list (below). It is strongly recommended that you complete the ESOL specialization courses prior to your internship. The ESOL specialization courses are:
- TSL 6245: Principles of Language for ESOL Teachers (Required)
- FLE 6167: Cross-Cultural Communication for Educators
- FLE 6165: Bilingual and Bicultural Education
- TSL 6145: Curriculum and Materials Development for ESOL K-12
- TSL 6373: Methods of Teaching English as a Second Language
- TSL 6440: ESOL Testing and Evaluation
