Dissertation Award
Zhou Li has received the 2009 Doctoral Dissertation Grant from The International Research Foundation (TIRF). Zhou's dissertation involves Adolescent ESL students' Second Language Literacy Engagement in World of Warcraft (WoW) and the grant will fund Zhou's research until October 2010.

Graduate Teaching Award
Dr. Jane Townsend, Associate Professor in English Education and Literacy & the Arts, is the recipient of the 2008-2009 Graduate Faculty Teaching Award in the College of Education. Congratulations to Professor Townsend for this important distinction!
International Reading Association 2009 Dissertation of the Year
Dr. Jennifer Graff, a 2007 graduate from STL's doctoral program in Language, Literacy, and Culture, has just been awarded the International Reading Association's Dissertation of the Year, for her dissertation, "The Literary Lives of Marginalized Readers: Preadolescent Girls' Rationales for Book Choice and Experiences with Self-Selected Books." Dr. Graff is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Language and Literacy Education at the University of Georgia. Congratulations to Jennifer and our faculty for this exceptional achievement!
STL Professor Appointed to NCTE Commission
Dr. Barbara Pace was recently appointed to serve as a member of the Commission on Media for the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Her term will begin after the 2008 Annual Convention scheduled for November 20-25, in San Antonio. Fantastic job Dr. Pace!
New Leadership Roles
Dr. Thomas Dana, the STL Director, will serve the College of Education in a new way. Effective July1, 2008, Dr. Dana will be the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Education. Thank you for your service Dr. Dana and best wishes in your new position.

Dr. Sevan Terzian has been named a 2007-2008 University-wide Teacher of the Year!

Ms. Ji Young Kim won the Marilyn Little Scholarship, a university-wide scholarship awarded to female international students.
Prestigious Predoctoral Fellowship Award
Mrs. Jennifer Drake Patrick has received a prestigious, highly competitive Adolescent Literacy Predoctoral Fellowship from the National Academy of Education for her dissertation proposal titled “Secondary Science Teachers Learning to Teach Science as Specialized Discourse.”

STL Faculty Named as one of the College of Education's B.O. Smith Professors
Dr. Kara Dawson has been named as a B.O. Smith Professor for a 2-year term. Dr. Dawson's work will build on a study she conducted for Florida Department of Education's Bureau of Instruction and Innovation on the impact of laptop technologies and professional development on student achievement. Way to go Dr. Dawson!!
STL Faculty Receive Outstanding Paper Award at SITE Conference
Dr. Cathy Cavanaugh, Dr. Kara Dawson, and Dr. Albert Ritzhaupt (at UNF) received the SITE 2008 Outstanding Paper Award for their manuscript "Conditions, Processes and Consequences of 1:1 Computing in Classrooms: The Impact on Teaching Practices and Student Achievement".
