EME 6205: Digital Photography and Visual Literacy

--------
Brief Description: Students will explore three main aspects of digital photography.  First, we will investigate a variety of ways to take digital photos, with the goal being a collection of photographs that can be used in a teacher’s curricula.  Second, we will explore digital photography as a process that teachers can use with students to help them learn about important subject matter.  Finally, we will discuss the importance of helping students become visually literate.

--------
Expanded Description: “They say a picture is worth a thousand words.  But I’ve seen some pictures that are worth more words than others!  How can I take pictures (or edit them digitally) to most effectively communicate my message?”

“I’ve heard that visual literacy is now a key element in effective teaching and learning.  What does that mean and how can I use images in my teaching?”

“The school district bought me a digital camera, but I really don’t know how to use it.  I’m also wondering, is it possible that I could have my students using it while they’re learning?”

In this eight-week course, participants will answer these questions (and more!) in learning about the educational aspects of digital photography.  If you have taken a photography course before, this course will provide a good review of the material, as well as an opportunity to explore photography in teaching and learning.  If you are new to photography, this course will provide an important exploration of the exciting topic.
