Dr. Doud’s 44 years of professional experience includes 1 year as an elementary school teacher, 4 years as an elementary school teaching principal, and 21 years as an elementary school principal in Iowa. He was a member of the faculty at the University of Northern Iowa for 24 years, including 16 years as Elementary Principal and 1 year as Acting Director of Malcolm Price Laboratory School, and 7 years as a Professor of Educational Administration. During the latter 7 years, he also served 4 years as a half-time Director of the Iowa Principals’ Academy and Assessment Center.

An active leader in state, regional and national professional associations, Dr. Doud served as President of the Iowa Association of Elementary and Middle School Principals (1974-1975), as NAESP State Representative (1976-1980), as a member of the NAESP Board of Directors (1980-1986), and as President of the National Association of Elementary School Principals (1984-85). He also served as a member of the Executive Board of the North Central Association Commission on Schools (1976-1988), as Chair of the NCA Commission on Schools (1983-84), and as a member of the Association Board of Directors (1981-1988). Jim was named the recipient of the University of Northern Iowa’s 1994 Outstanding Service Award and the Drake University Outstanding Alumni Award in 1998, and was identified by the NAESP Board of Directors as a “2003 Honorary National Distinguished Principal.” He is currently Chair-Elect of the Florida SACS CASI Council.

The author of several publications, including the past 2 NAESP Ten Year Studies (The K-8 Principal in 1988 and The K-8 Principal in 1998), Dr. Doud chaired the NAESP committees that developed Standards for Quality Elementary and Middle Schools (1984, 1996), was a member of the revision committee for this document in 1990, and chaired each of the committees that developed Proficiencies for Principals (1986, 1991, 1997). Jim was one of three authors of NAESP’s Principals for 21st Century Schools (1990) and served as a special consultant and research advisor during development of NAESP’s Leading Learning Communities: Standards for What Principals Should Know and Be Able to Do. Jim was Project Director and Chair of the Elementary Steering/Writing Committee for the National Study of School Evaluation (1991-1994), guiding development of Elementary School Improvement: Focusing on Student Performance (1993, 1994), a systematic facilitators manual and guide that assists a school staff in conducting a comprehensive self-evaluation of their school program. The latest revision of this guide, School Improvement: Focusing on Student Performance is used in elementary, middle, senior high and K-12 schools throughout the nation and overseas as part of the voluntary regional school accreditation self-study process.
