What is the Democracy, Diversity, and Literacy (DDL) Community?

The DDL Community is a part of the fourth semester of professional education experienced by prospective elementary teachers enrolled in the Unified Proteach Program. The DDL Community is composed of pre-interns (PI), school-based teacher educators (SBTE) from Alachua and PK Yonge Elementary, and university-based teacher educators (UBTE) from the University of Florida who share a commitment to exploring issues of diversity, democracy, and literacy.

The DDL Community's commitment to teaching for Diversity, Democracy, and Literacy grows out of the Unified Proteach Program's two overarching themes and Florida's commitment to Civic Education as evidenced in the Sunshine State Standards.  The overarching Unified ProTeach program themes include:

(1)               Democratic Values: Teachers within a democratic society must be committed to the value of equity in education and society. They must be able to work collaboratively with others to develop alternative ways of educating our diverse population and they must accept responsibility for the learning of ALL children. Faculty is committed to a broad definition of diversity that includes ethnic and national heritage, special educational needs, gender, sexual orientation, social class and religion.

(2)               Knowledge of content and inclusive pedagogy: Because in today's world content is constantly expanding, teachers increasingly will be asked to make decisions about what and how to teach. Our aim is to help pre-service teachers develop knowledge of subject area content in order to identify and organize appropriate content for learning elementary instruction and to develop inclusive pedagogy to facilitate all students' learning.

Thus, the DDL Community is a group of educators with a shared interest in creating a context focused on diversity, democracy, and literacy targeted at enhancing:

  • All children's learning
  • All prospective teacher learning
  • All school and university based teacher educator learning
