Activity 1: Life
Cycle of the Butterfly
(back
to top)
Age: 5-8
Activity: Students take a paper plate and divide it into four sections. In the top left section, students will draw a leaf and glue a piece of rice to represent egg. In the top right section, students will then draw a branch and glue a piece of gnocchi (pasta) to it to represent the caterpillar. In the bottom right section, students will then draw a branch and glue a shell pasta to represent the chrysalis. In the bottom left section, glue a bow tie pasta to represent a butterfly. Finally, have students label each section with the stage of development.
Materials: Paper plate, crayons/markers, rice, pasta - bow tie, shell, gnocchi, glue
Preparations/Safety Precautions: When storing the pasta, make sure that bugs do not get into the pasta. This may occur if storing for a long time.

Activity 2: Caterpillars (back to top)
Age: 5-8
Activity: Students take a green piece of paper and trace a leaf pattern onto it. They cut out their leaf. Write their name on the back. Using a variety of beans, they form a pattern repeating it at least three times. Once the teacher approves the pattern, students glue the beans down and draw a face on the first bean.
Materials: Green paper, Leaf Pattern, Markers, beans (lima, pinto, kidney, red, black), glue, scissors
Preparations/Safety Precautions: Make sure that students are aware of the safety rules with scissors.

Activity 3: Moon Rocks (back to top)
Age: 5-8
Activity: This activity would follow a discussion about moons and facts related to the moon. In a group of 5-6 children, introduce the materials that they will be mixing( 2 cups flour; 1/2 cup salt; black tempera paint; 3/4 cups water). Have students mix together materials and allow all children to have a turn helping. Give each child a certain amount of substance and have them form it into their own creation. Allow children to ask questions and make comments while giving constructive feedback. Place plastic beads in front of each child and explain to them that they are to place them in their dough to represent pieces of glass. Allow children time to finish and upon completion have them help place it on newspaper and write their name beside it. Explain to students that the dough has to be left to dry and then they will all be displayed in classroom. Dismiss children to wash hands and go on to their appropriate work station.
Materials: "The Best Book of The Moon" by Ian Graham; photo of moon; newspaper, tape; table cloth; marker; flour; salt; black tempera paint; water; clear glitter; clear plastic beads; bowl; paper towels
Preparations/Safety Precautions: Encourage children not to eat the dough or put beads in their mouth. With the use of glitter it is important to make sure that it is not consumed or put in the eye.

Activity 4: Dream catchers(back to top)
Age: 5 - 8
Activity: Give student a prepared paper plate. Instruct students to weave the yarn from one hole to another, crisscrossing the yarn and designing their own web shape. Once the student has finished weaving, help them tie the yarn to a final hole. Attach a piece of yarn at the top, to hand the dream catcher above a bed. Attach several pieces of yarn, at varying lengths, to bottom to attach beads, feathers, etc. Have students tie on decorations however they wish. They may also decide to paint or color the paper plate.
Materials: Small paper plates; hole puncher; yarn; beads; feathers; twigs; any materials to decorateTo prepare small paper plates - cut out the inner circle leaving a wreath shape. Hole punch several holes all around the "wreath." Attach a long piece of yarn to one hole.Preparations/Safety Precautions: Review proper scissors handling rules if students are cutting their own yarn and paper plates. Remind students not to put materials in their mouths.

Activity 6: Colored Sand Art (back to top)
Age: 4-8
Activity: Place sand in several shallow pie pans. Have students rub colored chalk into the sand - this will produce different colors of sand. Using clear containers, have students pour colored sand into the container, layering the colors as they go. When they are at the top of the container, using a chop stick have them push it through the layers of sand on the edge of the container. Pour glue over the top of the sand to help keep it in place. If the container has a top, put it back on.
Materials: Sand; Colored Chalk; Pie Pans; Clear containers; Glue; Chopstick
Preparations/Safety Precautions: Encourage children not to eat the sand or chalk. Watch for chalk dust if students are particularly sensitive.

Activity 7: Balloon Spider (back to top)
Age: 4 - 8
Activity: Blow up a round black balloon so that it's only slightly inflated. Tie the balloon shut. Twist the balloon, making a large part (for the body) and a smaller part for the head. Secure it with piece of yarn or a twist tie. *If the balloon is no stretchy enough to do this, use two balloons and them their stems together. Fold each of 4 pipe cleaners in half. Twist the middle of each pipe cleaner and wrap around the twist in the balloon. This makes eight legs. Fold and shape each leg to look like a jointed spider's leg. Using the white out or paint, draw eyes and fangs.
Materials: Black balloons (thick and round), Yarn or twist tie, 4 Black Pipe Cleaners, White Out or White Tempera Paint
Preparations/Safety Precautions: When using balloons, remind students not to swallow them. Balloons are a large choking hazard.

Activity 8: Dinosaur Bones (back to top)
Age: 4-8
Activity: Crumple up newspaper and tape to ends of paper towel tube to create desired bone shape. Make a simple, thin glue from flour and water (boiling it gives it a nice consistency but it is not necessary). Mix 1 cu of flour into 1 cup of water until the mixture is thin and runny. Stir into 4 cups of boiling water. Simmer for about 3 minutes then cool. Have children tear a lot of strips of newspaper and/or brown bag paper. Strips should be about 1 inch wide but it does not really matter. Dip a newspaper strip into the cooled glue, then wrap it around the bone. Cover the entire bone, then let it dry. It might take a day or more to dry. When dry, paint the bone.
Materials: Paper towel tube (or any size tube); Large plastic bowl; Flour; Water; Newspaper; Tape; Tempera Paint in desired color; Brush
Preparations/Safety Precautions: Adult should make the glue mixture if using the boiling method.
