Art Appreciation

Activity 1: Literature and field trip to museum (back to top)
Age: K-1
Activity: Teacher will read the story Molly Meets Mona and Friends: A Magical Day at the Museum by Walker and Minnerly. The students will then take a field trip to a local art museum to view a variety of artwork.
Materials: Molly Meets Mona and Friends: A Magical Day at the Museum, Field trip materials (parent permission slips, emergency cards, attendance, etc)
Preparations/Safety Precautions: Teacher needs to arrange the field trip. They need to be sure that they have adequate number of chaperones for the number of students attending the field trip. They also need to discuss with the students the rules of the field trip and rules while visiting the museum. This can be done after reading the story.

Activity 2: Kinetic Art (back to top)
Age: K-1
Activity: Introduce children to kinetic art, artists, and how it involves participation. Children can then create a mobile using a variety of materials.
Materials: Examples of kinetic art, Information about kinetic artists, materials to make a mobile (can vary depending on type of mobile).
Preparations/Safety Precautions: The teacher would need to research kinetic art and artists. They would then need to provide materials for student use that would not be hazardous or present a safety issue.

Activity 3: Cubism and Picasso (back to top)
Age: K-1
Activity: Discuss with students Pablo Picasso and allow them to view some of his works. Discuss with them the concept of cubism and explain that they will create a picture using a method similar to cubism. Instruct children to create a collage using only geometric shapes, either torn or cut. They can also look through magazines to find letters if they wish.
Materials: Works of art by Picasso, old magazines, a variety of paper for students to use when creating their collage, scissors, glue, thicker paper to create collage on, pencil
Preparations/Safety Precautions: The teacher needs to research Picasso and cubism. They need to find works of art done by Picasso, where he used the technique of cubism.

Activity 4: Art Critique (back to top)
Age: K-1
Activity: Children will critique pieces of art both professionally created and art created in the class. The teacher will act as a facilitator. The art critique will focus on five things.
1. What is it?
2. What do you see when you look at this work of art?
3. What is the artist trying to say?
4. How does it make you feel?
5. Do you like it?
The aim of this activity is to have children acquire artistic appreciation and make judgments based on accepted standards, including the artistic elements.
Materials: Works of art for students to look at and critique
Preparations/Safety Precautions: Before children critique a piece of art, the teacher should provide background information about the work, artist, and time when the piece was created. The teacher must find a variety of art pieces and research the piece and artist.

Activity 5: Prehistoric Art and Stone Painting (back to top)
Age: K-1
Activity: Introduce children to prehistoric art and cave paintings. The children will then paint an animal or person of their choice on a flat stone. Talk with children about how the cave artists mixed their own paint from natural materials and how their pictures were simple.
Materials: Paint, paint brushes, flat stones, water, paper to cover work surface, pictures of prehistoric art
Preparations/Safety Precautions: Teacher needs to research the time period. They also need to find stones that are flat and do not have flat edges. A discussion on how to use the stone appropriately.

Activity 6: Impressionism and Vincent van Gogh (back to top)
Age: K-1
Activity: Discuss with students Vincent van Gogh and allow them to view some of his works. Discuss with them the concept of impressionism and explain that they will create a picture using a method similar to impressionism. Instruct children to create an outdoor painting by dabbing paint with their index finger. Encourage children to use separate dots rather than mixing them.
Materials: Works of art by van Gogh, paper to paint on, pencil, a variety of colors of paint, paper towels or napkins
Preparations/Safety Precautions: The teacher needs to research van Gogh and impressionism. They need to find works of art done by van Gogh, where he used the technique of impressionism. Instruct children on proper behavior while painting with their fingers. Set up paint near a sink so children can easily and quickly wash their hands.

Activity 7: Appreciating elements: Line (back to top)
Age: K-1
Activity: Instruct children to cut strips of paper in a variety of lengths and widths. Have children arrange their lines into a design and glue onto a piece of construction paper.
Materials: Scissors, variety of paper, construction paper, glue
Preparations/Safety Precautions: May need to provide pre-cut strips for any student who may not be able to cut with scissors.

Activity 8: Appreciating elements: Texture (back to top)
Age: K-1
Activity: Provide a variety of textured materials for children to use in making a collage. Children can glue the materials onto a piece of cardboard.
Materials: Variety of textured materials (include recycled materials and natural materials), glue, cardboard, pencil
Preparations/Safety Precautions: Teacher will need to have a collection of textured materials. Teacher can either collect on own or include the students in the collection process.

Activity 9: Principles of Design: Pattern (back to top)
Age: K-1
Activity: Provide children with a variety of materials (such as foil, wallpaper, fabric, rapping paper, etc.). Children will create a pattern and paste it onto their paper. Encourage children to paste the pattern in a variety of directions.
Materials: Scissors, variety of paper, construction paper, glue
Preparations/Safety Precautions: May need to provide pre-cut shapes for any student who may not be able to cut with scissors. Students will also need a lesson and introduction to patterns. This activity could be used with a math lesson.

Activity 10: What is a still-Ii fe? (back to top)
Age: K-l
Activity: Teacher will-display print of Iris by .Vincent Van Gogh and Sunflowers by Vincent Van Gogh and the children will discuss what the paintings look like and how they were constructed. Then, the children will gather their own materials to place in front of them and paint their own still life.
Materials: Prints of Irises, Sunflowers, 12 x.1.S white-drawing paper, crayons(work like crayons but when you paint water on the drawing it turns to watercolor}, water containers, brushes, materials for children to gather.
Preparations/Safety Precautions: Teacher needs to make sure children use the materials in an area that will not spills child can fall.

Activity 11: Cray-Pas and Van Gogh (back to top)
Age: K-l
Activity: Students will choose their favorite art postcard by Vincent Van Gogh. Students will duplicate the artwork onto their drawing paper.
Materials: Cray-pas, van Gogh art postcards, white drawing paper
Preparations/Safety Precautions: Teacher needs to arrange the field trip. They need to be sure that they have adequate number of chaperones for the number of students attending the field trip. Activity: Teacher will display various pictures of people in caring relationships and the children will discuss how the pictures make them feel and how artists are conveying a message.
Materials: Reproductions of relationships: Cassatt, Mary, Sleepy Baby., de Hooch, Pieter, Mother Nursing her Child., Picasso, Pablo, The Lovers., Tanner, Henry, The Banjo Lesson.
Preparations/Safety Precautions: Make sure prints are age-appropriate.

Activity 13: Eric Carle Collage (back to top)

Activity: Have children examine the artwork of Eric Carle's collage technique. The children will then create - their own piece of artwork using Eric Carle's technique.
Materials: Colored tissue paper, vinegar, white construction paper, glue, scissors
Preparations/Safety Precautions: Teacher needs to make sure students don't drink the Vinegar .

Activity: Children will examine Piet Mondrian's "Composition in Red, Yellow and Blue" and create - a work in the style of the work examined.
Materials: Print reproductions of Composition-in Red, Yellow, and Blue", white construction paper, black, blue, red and yellow paint, small paint brushes, q-tips, paint smocks.
Preparations/Safety Precautions: Teacher need to make sure children know the proper use of the paint

Activity: Children will examine the artwork "Girl Before a Mirror and discuss the details of the face. The children will then create an outline of their own face by using their shadow reflected on the wall.
Materials: Print reproductions of"Girl Before a Mirror", light gray construction paper, white paper, bright light, pencil
Preparations/Safety Precautions: Teacher needs to make sure children do not look directly at light.
