| In 2006, the College of Education celebrates 100 years of preparing teachers, counselors, administrators, college professors and school psychologists for roles in education. Since 1906, our College has been a nationwide leader in education, with early visionaries setting the standard for a tradition of creative thinking that continues today.
Over the past century, our faculty have pioneered landmark initiatives such as Head Start and Florida's first laboratory school, and they have been instrumental in the community college and middle-school movements and in science and counselor education. As Florida's flagship teaching college, our five-year programs for teacher preparation were among the first of their kind and remain among the best.
Today, our 115 full-time faculty teach over 1,900 students in more than 40 bachelor's and advanced-degree programs within five academic departments: Counselor Education; Educational Administration and Policy; Educational Psychology; Special Education; and Teaching and Learning. Innovative research and initiatives that enhance school improvement, student achievement and leadership development in numerous education disciplines are hallmarks of our College.
To mark this important milestone in our College history, we have planned a number of events, beginning this month with a talk and panel discussion featuring nationally syndicated New York Times columnist and best-selling author David Brooks and culminating in a year-end conference that will focus on national and international issues of importance to education. We hope you will join us in these celebrations as we reflect on our past and present accomplishments and look to our future growth and successes in our next 100 years.
