Student Personnel in Higher Education

"Leading to make a difference "

Welcome!

The University of Florida Student Personnel in Higher Education program is designed to prepare students to enter Student Affairs leadership positions in two- and four-year institutions of higher education. The program integrates academic coursework with practitioner-based experience.

Students enter the graduate program in the fall as members of a cohort group. The group provides support and builds a sense of community for the students.

The master's degree requires 46 semester hours, which is completed in two years. It consists of a core of 36 hours of coursework and includes 10 hours of supervised practicum and internship experiences. All students are assigned a faculty advisor at the time of admission.

The Curriculum
The student affairs profession is increasingly diverse and is engaged in a variety of activities and programs. The emphasis in UF's master's degree program in SPHE is upon the promotion, design, and assessment of student learning in a variety of campus and community settings. All students will enroll in these core courses:

Foundations of Student Affairs

Educational Outcomes

Student Development Theory

Contemporary Research

Campus Environments

American Higher Education

Diversity

Student Affairs Administration

Legal and Ethical Issues in Student Affairs

Capstone Seminar

All students will also enroll in a practicum or internship course during the program.

Financial Assistance
Students are encouraged to apply to the UF Office for Student Financial Affairs for assistance with loans, grants, and fellowships. In cooperation with the UF Division of Student Affairs and Sante Fe College, several part-time positions are available in such areas as orientation, residence life, career services, student activities, Greek life,  multicultural programs, etc. On-campus interviews for these positions will take place on SPHE Visitation Day and then, on an on-going basis as necessary for positions to begin in the Fall term.

The SPHE program hosts a Visitation Day for prospective students at the beginning of each year (usually February). Students have an opportunity to get acquainted with the SPHE faculty and staff, current students, and the campus itself.
