Background

Mary Ann Clark received her Ph.D. in Counselor Education, specializing in School Counseling, at the University of Florida in 1998. She earned her M.Ed. in Guidance and Counseling at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her B. A. in psychology from Wake Forest University. She is a National Certified Counselor. Dr. Clark was an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, from 1998 - 2000 before returning to the University of Florida. She is now an associate professor in the Department of Counselor Education and is the coordinator of the school counseling program. Dr. Clark has worked as a school counselor and administrator most recently with the Department of Defense Dependent Schools on military bases in England where she held a variety of positions over a 13 year period. She enjoys collaborative activities, including field experiences for students and research with the School Board of Alachua County. She is currently involved in an "Internationalizing the Curriculum" project supported by UF's International Center in which she is collaborating with Nottingham University in the U.K. and Wollongong University in Australia, and has made presentations at international conferences in Beijing and Rome.

Areas of Interest and Inquiry

Dr. Clark's current research interests include university/school partnerships, cross cultural collaborations, the school counselor as educational leader, and school counseling interventions to support academic achievement.  Her areas of specialization include developing collaborative models of training preservice school counselors and teachers, working with partnership schools, and examining success factors in student academic achievement. She is a member of various professional organizations including the American Counseling Association (ACA), the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), the American Educational Research Association (AERA), and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). Dr. Clark is on the Editorial Board of the Professional School Counselor, ASCA's journal, and also reviews articles and books for other publications. She has published a variety of journal articles and book chapters and is the co-author of a book on Character Education. She is currently co-editing a book on the organization of school counseling programs.
