Printing Culture & Technology Resources

When the using the Print All command, all the items in the Print List window (figure above) will be printed. The disc number determines the order, not the order given in the Print List. Any items from Disc 1 will be printed first, then from Disc 2, and finally from Disc 3. You will be prompted to insert a disc as needed (see swapping discs). After a resource prints, it drops from the Print List. You can add items to the list in one session and print them out in another, because the Print List will be saved automatically at the end of each session. You can stop printing at any point without losing items from the list.

Note: When you add items to the Print List a little printer icon automatically appears to the left of the title in the Resources List if it is in the current search. (See also Getting started: A tutorial, Step 9.)

The default printer page setup for your printer may have a printing page size that is too small for some pages of the C & T resources. Most printers have an option in the Page Setup that allows you to increase the printing page size (see Print menu in the Description of menu items section). For example, if you are using a LaserWriter printer:

1. Choose the Page Setup command in the Print menu.

2. Click the Options button.

3. Click to turn on the Larger Print Area option.

You may use the Page Setup command to set this option at any time and the setting will be saved through successive sessions.

Printing resolution

Most of the CULTURE & TECHNOLOGY documents come in two versions: 72 dpi color or gray scale (LoRes) for on-screen display and 300 dpi black and white (HiRes) for better print quality. Some resources, such as filmstrips, come in the 72 dpi color or gray scale version only. You can choose to print a document using the LoRes version or the HiRes version, if available. You can set print quality when adding an item to the Print List or when editing an item in the list (see figure below). You also can set it when printing directly from the Resource Window or Link Window. Use Preferences to set the default settings. (See Preferences.)

LoRes pages contain gray scale or color images and normally must be printed with the Color/Grayscale option on for best results. The Culture & Technology program cannot control this option directly. If the LoRes prints appear black and white rather than gray scale or color, open the document and print it from the Resource window with the Color/Grayscale option on (see your printer manual). With some printers, you only need to set this option once; with others, you have to set it each time you want to print.

When you attempt to print, you will be given the option of not printing resources that have been printed previously in the current session. If you have already printed resources that appear again in your current attempt to print, you will get a dialog box (figure above) asking if you wish to skip those documents:

You also can make your choice a default setting using the Preferences command (see File menu in the Description of menu items section). This option becomes especially significant when you elect to print linked resources, using the Include Linked Material option, because it may include resources you have already printed. This option, which appears in the Add to Print List dialog box, allows you to print all of the items in the links list for the resource you are printing (see Printing resolution above; see also Getting started: A tutorial, Step 9).

Note: All resources, except video and audio, can be printed. Filmstrip images will print along with their commentaries (see notes on Printing resolution above).
